Sanctuary 12
This
is the largest sanctuary, and attracts predators such as fox, mongoose,
genet, the common buzzard and the eagle owl. Not only size
but diversity of soil, aspect and water regime all contribute
to the abundance of species to be found in this sanctuary.
An open grassy space in woodland such as this is
valuable to many tree-dwelling birds and other animals, for it
allows them to seek food in relative safety from ground predators. Dead trees are an asset to any habitat, so they
are left standing in this sanctuary. They not only provide nesting
sites in rotten branches for cavity-nesting birds, but are also
rich feeding for wood-boring insects, which in turn provide food
for woodpeckers, treecreepers, nightjars and other birds.
