Sanctuary 6
Here, a deep dell
holds water for much of the summer. It is bordered by warm, south-facing
rocks which make an ideal habitat for amphibians and reptiles.
The little green Iberian wall lizard may often be seen here.
Sallows and other moisture-loving plants flourish
in the damp soil at the bottom of the sanctuary. Sallow flowers
produce copious nectar and pollen early in the year when most
needed by the newly-arrived migrant songbirds. The excellent
cover provided by thick brambles scrambling into the cork oaks
encourages these birds to stay and nest. |
